When to have your child’s first eye exam

The American Optometric Association recommends a comprehensive professional eye examination be performed at 6 months, 3 years and 5 years. A comprehensive examination includes: the evaluation of the refractive state (checking to see if there is a prescription needed), a dilated fundus examination, visual acuity, ocular alignment, binocularity (the ability to see in 3D), and color vision testing where appropriate.

Dr. Mersch is a provider of the InfantSee program. Developed by the American Optometric Association, Optometrists volunteer to perform a comprehensive examination on babies between 6 months and 1 year of age regardless of income or insurance. It is a complimentary service we are proud to provide. We feel children’s vision care is essential to every child’s healthy development.

Eighty percent of what is learned in the first twelve years is done through a child’s eyes. Good vision is fundamental to reading, which in turn is important for learning. It is important to detect any vision problems early making sure your son or daughter can attain their best academic performance possible.* If a patient has undetected amblyopia (lazy eye) it can be very difficult to rehabilitate vision. The typical school screening cannot detect potentially serious visual problems; therefore, a school screening can not be substituted for a wellvision exam.

Protect your children’s eyes from the harmful effects of the sun

Sunglasses are a must! You wouldn’t dream of allowing your child to become sunburned instead of using sunscreen. Think of sunglasses as “sunscreen for the eyes”.

UV exposure affects the eyes at EVERY age. Experts say 50% (or more) of our lifetime exposure to UV rays may occur by age 18, since children typically spend much more time outdoors.* Therefore, it is extremely important that children begin to wear sun protection as early as possible putting them on the path to long term healthy vision.

The best eye protection is provided by good quality sunglasses blocking 100% of the UV rays. Our opticians can help you select the perfect sunglasses for your child’s needs. We also offer prescription sunglasses to fit any age patient.
